Florida heat can be tough on an aging battery
Heat is the main thing that permanently takes capacity off a hybrid battery, and Florida supplies it almost all year. Somewhere colder, a battery gets a few months of relief; here the mild season is still warm, so the chemistry that uses it up never really slows down. Humidity is the half people miss. Dry air carries heat away; heavy, wet air doesn’t. The cooling system works by drawing cabin air across the battery, and in August that air is already warm and saturated when it arrives. Nights that stay in the high seventies mean the vehicle begins the next day without having cooled off at all. Here’s what that looks like depending on how you use the vehicle.

Heavy A/C use can reveal a weak battery

When the A/C is working overtime, your hybrid has another demand to manage. If the battery is already losing capacity, you may notice the gas engine running more often, sluggish acceleration, and fuel economy that is not what it used to be.

Stop-and-go traffic works your hybrid battery

Florida traffic means plenty of braking, accelerating, and crawling along. As your hybrid battery ages, the gas engine may run more often — using more fuel and cutting into the MPG you bought a hybrid for.

Parked in the sun is worse than driving in it

Driving at least keeps air moving. Parked in the Florida sun, your hybrid can sit for hours soaking up heat with no airflow to carry it away. For an aging battery, that heat has nowhere to go.

Skip the shop — we bring the battery to you

No tow, no loaner, and no afternoon in a waiting room. Free mobile installation means a technician comes out and installs the new battery without the vehicle going anywhere. Call (888) 473-7265 today.
Before you replace anything, make sure it's the battery

A failing hybrid battery usually announces itself: fuel economy drops, the gas engine runs more than it used to, a warning light comes on. Those same symptoms show up with other faults, so pull the trouble codes before you spend anything. Our trouble code lookup explains what each one means.

Which hybrid battery we recommend in Florida
We install all three of these across Florida, and mobile installation is free whichever one you choose. This choice comes down to heat, so compare how well each one handles high temperatures.
1 Our pick

New Module Sodium

Sodium is our top choice for Florida heat, built to perform in temperatures up to 140°F. Sodium also offers the longest expected life of the three at 5-7 years, backed by a 4-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

Sodium is newer technology, so it is not available for every vehicle yet. Find My Battery will quickly show you if it is available for yours.

2 Also a strong choice

New Module Prismatic

Prismatic is the closest match we offer to the battery your hybrid came with, so it drives the way you remember. Built to handle Florida heat, it lasts 4-6 years and comes with a 3-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

3

New Module Cylindrical

Cylindrical is the most affordable of the three and delivers the strongest power, which you can feel pulling away from a light. It lasts 3-5 years and comes with a 2-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

This order is for Florida. Each type carries its own warranty, so coverage depends on which battery you choose — the warranty page lists the terms, and the battery technology page has the full side-by-side comparison.

Common questions

Yes. A driveway, an office lot or a curbside space is all it takes — no shop visit, no tow, no garage. Tell us where you are and we’ll confirm the options for your address.

Heat is most of the reason. The hotter a battery gets, the faster it wears out, and the wearing speeds up as it goes. A state that stays warm all year costs a battery a lot more than one with a real winter.

Two reasons, and neither has anything to do with how far you drive. Heat works on a battery whether the vehicle is moving or parked. And a hybrid battery slowly loses charge while it sits, so a vehicle that stands for weeks and then does a short trip never gets topped back up.

The usual signs are worse gas mileage, the engine running more than it used to, less power on hills, and a warning light. Other problems cause the same signs, so read the trouble codes first. Our trouble code lookup tells you what each code means. In this climate the cooling filter clogs sooner than people expect, and a clogged filter causes much the same symptoms, so check the filter too.

You don’t have to work this out alone. Call (888) 473-7265 and we will read the codes with you, rule out anything else it could be, and confirm which battery fits your vehicle before you spend a cent.

Whatever it turns out to be, the vehicle still drives. A worn hybrid battery costs you gas mileage and some power. It does not leave you stranded.

The two numbers measure different things. Ten or twelve years is how long an original takes to fade that far, and it had been losing power for years before you noticed. The figures we give are service life, and we put a warranty behind each one. Sodium runs 5-7 years, prismatic 4-6 and cylindrical 3-5, and none of them has a mileage limit. In Florida heat an original has usually faded sooner than twelve years anyway.

Choose New Module Sodium if it is offered for your vehicle, because nothing we sell handles heat better and it lasts 5-7 years. Choose New Module Prismatic for the nearest match to your original battery. Choose New Module Cylindrical if price comes first. The battery technology page puts the three side by side. If you are not sure, pick any one of them and tell us you would like a quote with all the options for your vehicle, and we will put one together.

Every battery we install is covered, and none of the warranties has a mileage limit. There is nothing to cap, because how far you drive is not what wears a hybrid battery out. How many years you get depends on which battery you choose, and the warranty page has the terms.

Park in the shade whenever you can. On a long errand run, think about where the vehicle sits between stops. Change the cooling filter on schedule, because that filter is the only real maintenance a hybrid battery has. If the vehicle sits for weeks at a time, take it out for a decent drive now and then. A hybrid battery slowly loses charge when nothing is using it, and letting it run all the way down does permanent damage.
