Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes are generated when a vehicle’s onboard computers detect a fault or irregularity in one of the systems they monitor. When a DTC is set, the vehicle will typically illuminate the corresponding warning light on the dashboard to alert the driver that attention or service may be needed. These codes are categorized based on the system involved.
P-Codes (Powertrain)
P-codes almost always trigger the Check Engine Light (CEL). Because powertrain issues can affect drivability, emissions, and safety, P-codes generally take priority over other code types.
C-Codes (Chassis/ABS)
These refer to chassis systems such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), traction control, and stability control. A C-code commonly turns on the ABS or traction control warning light.
B-Codes (Body Control)
These involve body-related systems such as steering angle sensors, suspension controls, airbags, lighting circuits, and interior electronics. Depending on the vehicle, a B-code may illuminate steering, suspension, airbag, or other system-specific warning symbols.
U-Codes (Network/Communication)
These indicate communication faults between modules within the vehicle’s computer network (CAN bus). U-codes often point to wiring issues, low voltage conditions, or faulty control modules.
Code Priority and Hierarchy
Although multiple codes may appear at the same time, they are not always separate problems.
- P-codes usually override C, B, and most U-codes, meaning they should be diagnosed and repaired first.
- All codes follow a hierarchy, so the primary or “root cause” code must be addressed before chasing secondary or “symptom” codes. Once the main issue is resolved, many dependent or cascade codes may clear on their own.
DTC Status Types
These status indicators help determine whether a problem is current, intermittent, or previously resolved:
Current / Confirmed
The vehicle’s computer has detected a problem and verified that it is actively occurring. These issues typically require immediate diagnosis. Check engine light will come on if a P-code is detected.
Pending
A potential fault has been detected, but the computer has not yet confirmed it. If the issue repeats during subsequent drive cycles, it may progress to a confirmed code. Check Engine lights will come on if a P-code is detected.
History
Indicates that a fault occurred in the past but is not currently happening. These codes can help track intermittent problems or past failures. The Check engine light will not come on if the code has a history status.
Permanent
A special type of history code that cannot be cleared with a scan tool. Permanent codes remain stored until the vehicle completes the required self-tests and verifies that the issue has been resolved(this can take 6-12 months. Permanent codes were added by Vehicle Manufacturers to not honor warranties if the consumer damages a part. For example, if you buy a 2025 Toyota Prius, and 32 months later the vehicle runs out of gas, you get gas and clear the codes for the check engine, but the light keeps coming back up due to a hybrid battery problem (P0A80) It will also have a permanent code P3193 (Fuel Run Out) and the vehicle manufacturer will not honor the warranty on the hybrid battery since it was damaged due to running out of fuel.
Subset Codes
These codes are 3-digit numbers that can help pinpoint the more specific area of the P-code. Automotive dealers usually require subscriptions to their proprietary software to read subset codes, as some new scanners come preloaded with a limited timeframe of access to subset codes.
For Example: P0AA6 is a Hybrid Isolation Fault that can be caused by the hybrid battery, the inverter, the transmission, or the AC Compressor. The subset codes:
- 526: Generic code for the hybrid system
- 611: AC compressor issue or inverter/converter assembly issue
- 612: Hybrid battery issue
- 613: Transmission or inverter/converter assembly issue
- 614: Inverter/Converter assembly issue, hybrid battery issue, or fuses, cables, relays also need diagnosing.
Depending on the subset code for P0AA6, the diagnostic time to determine the fault is reduced from the original 5 hours as the mechanic can use the subset code to shorten the time it takes to diagnose.
Some subset codes will pinpoint the exact issue such as 612 under P0AA6 where it is 100% a hybrid battery fault.
