If you own a Toyota Prius and need a replacement hybrid battery, one of the most important details is knowing whether your vehicle uses a Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery or a Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery. Many Prius model years were offered with both battery chemistries, making accurate identification critical when ordering a replacement.
Fortunately, Toyota provides a simple way to identify which battery is installed in your vehicle.
Why Battery Chemistry Matters
Hybrid batteries are not one-size-fits-all. Ordering the wrong battery type can lead to compatibility issues and delays in getting your Prius back on the road.
At Green Bean Battery, we often help customers determine their battery chemistry before purchasing a replacement battery. The good news is that the answer is usually found right on your vehicle’s VIN label.
Step 1: Locate the Vehicle Identification Label
Open the driver’s side door and look for the factory Toyota VIN sticker located on the door jamb.
This label contains several pieces of information about your Prius, including an engine and vehicle model code that helps identify the hybrid battery type installed from the factory.
Step 2: Find the Model Code
On the VIN sticker, locate the code that begins with ZVW.
For example, you may see:
- ZVW51L-AHXHBA
- ZVW50
- ZVW51
The key information is the model designation immediately following “ZVW.”
In the example shown, the vehicle code is:
ZVW51
Step 3: Match the Model Code to the Battery Chemistry
Toyota uses specific model codes to indicate battery chemistry.
Gen 4 Prius Battery Identification
| Model Code | Battery Type |
| ZVW50 | Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) |
| ZVW51 | Lithium-Ion |

If your VIN label shows:
ZVW50 → Your Prius uses a NiMH hybrid battery
ZVW51 → Your Prius uses a Lithium-Ion hybrid battery
ZVW52 → Your Prius uses a Lithium-Ion Plug-In hybrid battery
Additional Verification Using VIN Information
Some Prius model years can also be identified using the VIN year code and Toyota’s internal battery codes.
For Gen 4 Prius vehicles:
| Model Year | 5th Digit | Internal Code | Battery Chemistry |
| 2016 | Not A/B | HB00135 C,N,S | Options |
| 2016 | A | HB00 225H | Lithium-Ion |
| 2016 | B | HB00 226H | NiMH |
| 2017 | Not A/B | HB00135 C,N,S | Options |
| 2017 | A | HB00 225H | Lithium-Ion |
| 2017 | B | HB00 226H | NiMH |
| 2018 | A | HB00 225H | Lithium-Ion |
| 2018 | B | HB00 226H | NiMH |
| 2019 | A | HB00 225H | Lithium-Ion |
| 2019 | B | HB00 226H | NiMH |
| 2020 | A | HB00 225H | Lithium-Ion |
| 2020 | 9 | HB00 226H | NiMH |
This information can be especially useful when verifying compatibility before ordering a replacement battery.
Why Toyota Used Both Battery Types
Toyota implemented both battery technologies across certain Prius trims and model years.
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)
- Proven long-term reliability
- Excellent durability
- Performs well in varying temperatures
- Used in many Prius generations
Lithium-Ion
- Lighter weight
- Improved energy density
- Enhanced efficiency
- Used in select Gen 4 Prius models
Both battery types have successfully powered Prius vehicles for hundreds of thousands of miles.
