How EV Batteries Work

Electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by advanced battery systems that supply energy to the electric motor and onboard electronics. Made up of hundreds or thousands of small cells, these cells are grouped into modules and assembled into a single battery pack. The battery provides direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter converts DC to alternating current (AC) to power the electric motor.

Inside Each Battery Cell

Each lithium-ion battery cell includes:

  • Cathode (positive electrode): Stores lithium-ions when discharged and releases them during charging, often made from lithium metal oxides such as (LCO, NMC, or LFP).
  • Anode (negative electrode): Stores lithium-ions when charged, typically made from graphite, though silicon is used for higher capacity.
  • Electrolyte: A liquid or gel containing lithium salts in organic solvents that allows lithium-ions to travel between the electrodes.
  • Separator: A thin, porous membrane placed between the cathode and anode to prevent direct contact while allowing lithium-ions to pass through.
  • Current Collectors: Made of aluminum for the cathode and copper for the anode, they facilitate the flow of electrons between the electrodes and the external circuit.
